Cypress vs Western Red Cedar
Cypress has superior rot resistance which makes it an excellent choice for outdoor use. While lighter in color, it turns silvery gray when exposed to the elements and can also be stained or painted. Cypress is harder (510 vs 350 Janka), which is a plus, considering the extremely soft nature of Westerm Red Cedar.  With greater hardness and density, comes more weight, but Cypress only runs about 20% heavier. That added weight comes from a higher resin content which is what gives it its excellent rot resistance and durability. Cypress has been used as a siding species for decades as well as interior and exterior millwork.  We have been working with it for years but it has always been a smaller player in the softwood game.  We think that is about to change and as such have a great deal of it currently in stock in Plain Sawn Grain across a wide variety of sizes. Quartersawn is also available but not in stock.
